Barbara Horwitz completed her Ph.D. in physiology at Emory University in 1966 after graduating with a B.S. in biology with highest honors (1961) and an M.S. in biology (1962) from the University of Florida. She then traveled west to UCLA where she began a postdoctoral fellowship in physiology. In 1968 she was appointed Assistant Research Physiologist at UC Davis; in 1972 she joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor; and in 1978 she was promoted to Professor. She became Chair of the Department of Animal Physiology in the Division of Biological Sciences in 1991, and after this department morphed into the Section of Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior, she served as its first Chair (1993-1998).
